Checking engine oil

stevo275, Apr 17, 11:53pm
should engine oil be checked when engine is cold or warm !

therafter1, Apr 17, 11:57pm
Best done cold.

Also best to make a habit of checking it on a level surface and carry out the check in the same place as much as possible.

Cold, always. That ensures that all oil has drained fully back into the sump. The best time to do it is first thing in the morning before you fire it up.

Just don't check it cold after you have run the engine as it takes hours for cold oil to run down to the sump to give you a true reading. Hot is fine but wait at least 10 mins for the oil level to settle and only do it on level ground.

Cold, the level should be on or slightly above the full mark
BUT basically hot/very warm checking is fine as longas it's on or slightly under full

As above when cold and on a level surface, a lot of people have forgotten that except for therafter1
