Different tyres on the same axle? Safe?

I went on this English websites about tyres and a no. of English drivers were saying they'd got 60,000 miles from their Michelin Energy savers.Maybe they're careful drivers but they didn't say that.

I don't know what they use on their roads over there but probably not the coarse chipseal we use here, I'm sure in the states if doing a lot of driving on their smooth 8 lane freeways you'd get some pretty good mileage too!

You would probably notice no problems at all.

Until the day comes that you need to brake hard while going down a steep hill in the rain, and your left front tyre grips but your right front tyre doesn't, because they have different tread designs and different materials. And then you'd be in the poo.
