It sounds like one of the valves is not closing properly assemble it with heaps of oil around those valves and see if it improves.

Jason, the gasket in the photo appears to be the metal shim which fits between the valve plates, if you lift the valve plate off the head you will find the fibre type head gasket which is the same shape as the shim plate and it will most likely be blown which lets the air move between the valves causing the blowback, we have the gasket sets for that style compressor at our store on Killarney Road, about $15.00 for the set which includes the two gaskets and the shim plate

haha spot on bud. Blown gasket in the middle. Must have been pulling to many revs when I was doing a skid.
