We have a Mazda Tribute which the air con has broken, they have told us that the compressor needs replacing and that they need to replace the receiver dryer as well, and other bits and pieces to which the cost would be around $1500-1700 I couldn't believe it! is this really how much it costs! Thanks

In a lot of cases, yes.It might be possible to get a second hand compressor for one of those, or perhaps a Ford Escape for a bit cheaper but the repairer might not be too enthusiastic about doing that.Depending on how and why the compressor failed, or is performing below par there can be much additional work involved in getting the system cleaned out and serviceable again. On top of that these compressors can be in absolute pigs of places to get to and remove from the engine. The RD needs replacing with a new one, no ifs or buts.If you are concerned get an itemised quote and a second opinion from another A/C specialist.

Can you get the air con going cheaper!
Absolutely, second-hand pump and bang some second hand (evacuated) gas in.
Is 1500-1700 about right to do the job properly!
Almost certainly.

Unfortunately A/C work is just that expensive.

glad i'm an a/c man then. i don't do cars anymore but unless you can get easy access to the compressor those jobs become a bitch. so is your bill.
