Air con compressor

trade4us2, Apr 26, 3:40am
mine is making crunchy noises and the air condiioning doesn't work any more.
Can they be reconditioned or do I need a new or second hand one!
If the compressor is changed, does the system need the refrigerant redone!

XJ8 (don't laugh!)

Is the A/C pump making the sound even when you have the system switched off! if so it could just need a new bearing in the nose which is not a hard job and a $50-80 bearing. This can cause the mag clutch to not enguage. But if the internals of the pump are making the sound then yes you need a replacment pump S/Hand or after market new S/H could be up round $300 and you will need the system recharged $65-150 with a new dryer fitted $80-100.

I turned the air con off so I could hear something on the radio, and there was a horrible crunching noise from the front of the car. Now the compressor makes a noise like it has square bearings. I'm not running the car unil it's fixed.
Should I use my usual mechanic (who is nearby) or an air condiioning specialist!

It makes the same crunching noise wih the air con switched off or on.

Sounds like the front bearing. If your usual mech is into A/C repairs and has his own A/C recovery gear then use him but if not then go to a specialist as your guy will only be the middle man and the cost will get away fast.

Good Call, see this all the time with people going to their local, who then drops it off to the spec as they don't have the gear or know how. Doesn't stop them wacking 20 - 30% on the bill though.

Yeah I had same problem with a Primera. Was the front bearing.

be the clutch bearing. i would get it fixed soonest if you can take the belt off for now if it only drives the AC be carfull to make sure it only drives that.

$3000 for a new compressor, plus fitting and regassing costs.

Cheaper to get it re-con'd! What did they say was wrong with it! Give AKLD auto air a call. Always found them good to deal with. Does pay to shop round

Time for a second opinion . sounds a bit OTT. I deal with a fair bit of AC work and never had to charge a customer anywere near 1K for a pump failer
