Engine light - 2004 Nissan Pulsar Wagon

The engine light came on in my Pulsar (NZ new Wingroad) today. It is a steady not a flashing light. This is the first car I have owned new enough to have an engine light. The internet tells me I should pay someone a bunch of money to plug in a scanner to get a fault code thay may or may not help find the problem.

Is there a common cause of engine lights in these Pulsar/Wingroads that I can check first! I would prefer to fix myself if possible.

Thanks

until you get the fault code or codes read out of it you are stabbing in the dark, even then it may not tell you exactly what is wrong, only where to start looking. There is no escaping getting a scan tool hooked up to it and analysis done. There are basic scan tools available to buy on here but you need to be sure they will work on your model.
