Err. that's a six year old article.

and it's UK based. I doubt the Mitsubishi Carisma is the 5th most reliable car in NZ. Although it's interesting to see the Carisma did much much better than the Volvo S40 it shares its platform with.

Wouldn't it be great if a NZ company published this data.or do they!

All depends on from where the info is gleaned and how the figures are calculated. Are Rolls Royce owners going to bother about an internet survey! Or is a lease company or back street garage, AA breakdown figures or warranty claims from an independent company, going to hold water! If they sell just 5 Rollers in a year, and one has a minor fault, is that a 20% failure rate!Or is something inherently simple with no bells and whistles going to be compared to something that has more electronic gubbins than NASA had 40 years ago!

That's a better one, the reliabilityindex is generally pretty accurate.

You just have to watch though, this sort of thing tends to become fodder for sleazy dealers to push people into cars that are only in the top 10. When realistically any car in the reliabilityindex top 100 is going to be more than reliable enough to not be of concern from a financial or inconvenience standpoint.

You also have to be aware that the actual model year does not appear in the list. When you look them up sometimes these examples are old and very basic models.

The U.K thing is not such a big deal. We are not a big enough country to have sensible samples and our warranty companies won't release any data because it would expose their scam over high premiums for all European vehicles etc.

The only other thing to bare in mind with U.K figures is that some cars are offered with very low spec over there and there are a lot more diesels (over 50%) and manual transmissions in the samples.

Overall though I find the reliabilityindex fairly accurate. It can be a useful resource when read in conjunction with a little research and common sense.

seriously! How did a honda get to the top!

ringo2, Feb 27, 4:37am
And not one Fiat or VW.

hamishcookie, Feb 28, 12:16am
Subaru Forester !

On what planet was this! I note its missing from the second list

phillip.weston, Feb 28, 12:31am
You know European cars are shite for reliability when they are topped by a Subaru Forester. that said, the Forester available in the UK would have been the bare bones non-turbo models without the coconuts cutting springs, fitting chromies and running them into the ground.

bubbles244, Feb 28, 2:16am
you forgot about the 20 inch dual subs vibrating all the interior fittings to bits.

pollymay, Feb 28, 3:37am
The most reliable is the car that is maintained. Your corolla isn't worth poo as far as reliability if the oil never gets changed. Also the target audience matters. 3sgte engines all seem to blow up and break but it's usually down to a couple yo boi owners in the car's past that didn't maintain it and threw boost controllers all over it etc

carisma number 5 are they there because there is only 5 of them on the road

phillip.weston, Feb 28, 7:24am
The Carisma actually sold quite a few cars in the UK & Europe despite being nothing particularly exciting (despite the name). Most of the models sold in that region would have had the basic and reliable 1.6 and 1.8 SOHC engines while they did have the 1.8 GDI at one point. Half the sales were diesels which had the Renault-sourced 1.9 direct injection diesel engine. Not to mention that cars sold in the UK are mostly manuals rather than automatics too.

The data is available in NZ but you have to pay for it and it ain't cheap. Mainly used by the car companies so they can benchmark against the competitors.
