What happened to 30/40 grade oil we had in the seventies that used to go in everything we drove ,be it 4 cylinder or V8's and zed cars etc.What do you put in your flathead V8 or other relic.

Anything. As tolerances have become finer as engineering has improved over the years, oil too has shifted up a gear . 30/ 40 still exists but numbers below 30 and above 40 . ie 10/50 give better protection at at higher/ lower ranges. They shouldn't give any problems, do any harm.

Go to the red sheds and get the cheapest oil pack sold , that should do it.

Plenty of places still doing 20w50 for the older stuff, Penzoil do a 25w60 which I never has an issue with. 30w40 and 20w40 are still around

You need to be thinking about the zinc content of modern oils. Most don't have enough to protect the old camshaft and lifters.
Some diesel oils still have zinc in them, and some oils made for classic cars. You can get additives as well. Try googling the subject. I'm sureyou'll find plenty of information
