Pro-audio and electronics technician here. Listen to SR2, he'll tell you the REAL truth of it and what he's said above is absolutely correct. As it stands, insufficient power AND too much power will kill a speaker. Get it right and your speakers will last. You don't see touring bands blowing up their speakers all the time - and they crank out a heap more power than any thump thump thump car stereo system will produce.

Second that, sr2 knows his stuff very well even though he goes at me for no reason at all sometimes.
