What,s wrong with the 1600 fitted!

rob_man, May 5, 4:49pm
From a purist's point of view the original non X-flow motor would be desirable, even though it was probably only a 1200. Wonder which gearbox it's running.

hi-ling, May 5, 4:55pm
Nothing wrong with the 1600, they are a fab little motor but it doesnt belong in a classic mk1. he should have put the factory 1500 none crossflow to give the car a bit more authenticity.

rob_man, May 5, 5:06pm
I would be happy with One of Toyota's Kent twin cam knock-offs under there. Perhaps with TOYOTUS stamped on the covers and a couple of Webers to add a bit more Euro-ness.

wasser61, May 5, 5:08pm
To be honest it is just a nice Mk1 modified Cortina. For that sort of the money I would be expecting an original MK1 2 door.

saffa2, May 5, 5:26pm
And a proper 1500 is just as fast and thirsty.

tigra, May 5, 5:35pm
What's the "correct Lotus Twincam motor"!Correct!

poppajn, May 5, 5:47pm
Going by the gear lever position I,d say it,s the standard box, not close ratio.

Doors gaps on a monocque shell should have been done.

rob_man, May 5, 7:22pm
Looks more like the front guard needs tweaking up a bit. They were better than that from new.

rayzor14, May 5, 7:25pm
Damn that thing is a credit to whoever built it.
I'm sure there are one or two things I would change - as no doubt many of us would to suit personal tastes but you sure cant fault much with it.

rob_man, May 5, 7:29pm
Yes, I would be happy to own it with a few minor changes but I would question the price a bit.

pge, May 5, 7:33pm
Many thx for that.

At the time, I was 17, and more into hotrods and motorracing then.

I understood, the NZ market was so small, the restrictions so severe, we were only allowed to have 4door cars, it was the ol' " We know what you want, and what's good for you" Govt mindset.

jerichord, May 5, 7:37pm
that guy n.t. had a red gt with a twin cam in it, swears it was a lotus but i knew the guy who built it, n.t. ,put it on its roof at puke once , a few guys got burnt believing it was genuine, i believe that n.t. was a guest of her magistey for a while , seems the car has disappeared, although i think it was advertised on t.m. once a couple of years ago.

rob_man, May 5, 7:38pm
More like the economics of supplying a small market and having one assemblyline.

bitsy_boffin, May 5, 8:09pm
The modern stereo right smack in the middle of the dash would annoy me.

Should have hidden it under the seats or something.

2 door Cortinas were here! - My Late father had one of the 1st 2 door Cortinas new it was a 1200 De Luxe 1962 it was white on the outside with brown tan interiorCQ plates from memory - It may have been a ex Ford Demonstrator (Supplied by Ford Lower Hutt!) as it supplied to my father via by Joe Auton later to run Ford NZ in the 1970s - I often wondered whats happened to it! - Been ex demonstrator it may have been UK new and in those days you had to have overseas funds in bank account to pay for it which my dad had!
He traded it in, in1970 fora new Ford Zephyr Mk4 3L Manual on the floor with power steering FJ8888 blue metallic non vinyl roof but fitted Ford Emblem on the bonnet it too has gone to the etherSimilar spec to later run off model Zephyr De Luxe (which England were still for sale in 1973 at Ford Dealers 1 year after production had stopped I understand a few came here) it too was brought via Joe Auton and was traded in 1972 for NZ New via Great Lake Motors of Taupo Holden HQ Priemer 4 door 253V8 Trimatic sedan

UK Ford Zephyr Mk4s were usually 2.5V6 but seems export ones over here were 3L from the Zodiac- Maybe Ford Zephyr MK4 expert can clarify

Also NZ got a number of 4 door Mk1 Escort 1300GTs in 1974 and can find no evidence of them been sold in the UK - It seems UK build for export here and Hong Kong - A Teacher of mine had one in Wanganui a Purple one!
