Family of 4, normal day to day driving. (i have a work van). Whats preferred! Zetec , Duratec, 2.5V6 ST, Manual, Auto. Looking at 2002 onwards, are all engines camchain, any major issues! (i recall i read something about plastic throttle body butterflies desintegrating). Or should I stay clear and stick to a Jappa.

Get a manual, the autos are rather gutless in comparison. The 2.0L engine is the most reliable option and best for general use, not much goes wrong with them, you get the odd Coil (Revised part fixes this) failure and the odd Rocker Cover leak, water pump etc but thats all stuff you will get on any car.

The V6 does have a bit more up and go and for the most part is relatively reliable, but parts aren't as cheap on them and they do take longer to fix due to harder access etc cause of the bigger engine so if something does go wrong it will cost more to fix.

I had those new for work vehicles. As above, if going for a 2.0 forget the auto, it completely ruins an otherwise good car. This is not just my opinion, of the dozens we had at the bank there was only one auto I came across (because you got to choose your own) and we all hated it, especially if we had to go over any significant hills/ranges.

Good car for your money if you can get one with sensible km's in really nice condition for under 6K (which is doable). Some people seem to be fishing for silly money for them and you can do better above that price.

Zetec sport engine, dont get me wrong just as reliable as the rest, theyre all well sorted cars.1.8 zetc UK escort is tops, light flywheel etc, but rare in NZ "Have u Driven a Ford lately" remember that advert,

icemans1, May 6, 2:04am
none of them

sandndude, May 6, 2:08am
They are shocking vehicles.

wasser61, May 6, 2:36am
As compared to what!

pnh4, May 6, 3:40am
True they do shock a few, the Focus shocked the rally world, Zetec F1 shocked the Monaco, I see where your coming from.

sifty, May 6, 3:44am
Hahaha, yep, nothing wrong with 2002 onwards, great car for the price.

fordcrzy, May 6, 3:56am
try and get a 2004+ manual. in 2004 they revised the intake system to fix a design fault. they are great cars. we had one for 5 years. only real common problems is faulty thermostat that fails open. coil packs every now and then. they are fantastic value for money and have the same engine as the mazdas (MZR Duratec)
"zetec" used to be an engine type in the old 90's mondeos then it became a specification like "glx or ghia"

rana24, May 6, 4:21am
maybe you could enlighten us all as to why you consider them 'shocking'

sandndude, May 6, 5:06am
I went from a Radisich V6 Telstar to a new ST24 both Orix lease.
Telstar only services.
ST 24,
Water leak in l/h footwell
A/c compressor- fail
Spongey brake pedal- no remedy after many attempts
Window regulator-fail x2
Door remote in key-fail
Rear bumper almost fell off for no apparent reason.
Thats all off the top of my head but there were other things.
Thats shocking for me.
I drive Falcons now.

phillip.weston, May 6, 5:17am
I think you're in the wrong decade.

phillip.weston, May 6, 5:18am
And what year was your ST24!

ryanm2, May 6, 5:24am
I had a V6 Radisich telstar, it was great. But If i recall pretty crap on fuel.

pnh4, May 6, 5:28am
Rear bumper almost fell off for no apparent reason.

sandndude, May 6, 5:32am
I think it was a 95, it was the first after the Telstar Phase out.

unbeatabull, May 6, 5:55am
Well thats a completely different car to the one OP is posting about. The first Gen Mondeo's, or Mondogs as we call them at Ford, were crap.

phillip.weston, May 6, 6:35am
Ok well we are talking about a model almost 10 years newer with little relevance to your 1995 model.

sandndude, May 6, 7:06am
But they are English are they not !

ryanm2, May 6, 7:16am
Dont think any were ever built in England.

fordcrzy, May 6, 7:19am
built in germany from memory ( or was it brazil!)
th2 2001+ mondeos have absolutly nothing in common with the crap 90's ones.

stevo2, May 6, 7:51am
Pretty sure they are built in Belgium

wasser61, May 6, 9:28am
Correct built at Ford Genk, Belgium.
It was and it still may be Ford largest Car plant. I was there in 1992, 1997 and 2003

maddog007, May 6, 9:49am
yep built in belguim, to very high Bmw/audi standards of same years,

I have had a high km 2001 nz new manual duratec wagon, now for a few years, its frustratingly good, i never had cars for this long, but as much as i want to change for change's sake, i cant find anything in its current price range that comes near it. it drives good, has no interior rattles, & is low maintenance & reliable.
I changed the inlet flaps when i got it, just to be safe, like changing a cambelt on other cars, but shouldnt have bothered, the ones in it where fine. but it only cost me $100 in parts, 2-3 hours and some scraped knuckles.

my only complaint is that since ive had it, it has been a delayed starter in warmer conditions, once its frosty it stat first half crank, think its probably to do with the temp sensor. i probably could have fixed it by now, but it never fails to start , just sometimes takes 2 seconds of cranking.
