Im looking to buy me a ute for work (30K budget), the common rail diesels are pretty good but there are a fair few horror stories of 10K plus rebuilds and alot of common problems are steering me more towards a petrol ute. Im a sparky, so not huge loads but possibly the towing of a boat or racecar is in my future. Any suggestions or experience would be helpful. Also any suggestions of good reliable utes would be nice. safe bet is to buy a new one but if 30k is it then go for a ranger or colorado they dont seem to have the big engine problems but remember any second hand ute comes with risk so check it out, heaps of people avoid road tax on diesols so this may explain some early engine failures. petrol i think in a ute will be costly to run just my opinion.

I'd go for a diesel, especially if you're going to be towing.
