Mitsi Diamante has a strong petrol or exhaust fume

Our Mitsi has a strong fume smell when driving with the windows down. Have checked for both exhaust and petrol leaks but have not found anything. Very stuffy on hot days but even opening the window a little causes a really strong smell. Also smells in the boot. Any ideas!

Check boot rubber seal, make sure it is sealing all the way around.

Im not sure but often there's a plate under the mat in the boot that is the access point for the pump. If there is remove that and check for fuel leaks around line and pump where it sits in. Dose it smell more when the tank is full or empty or makes no difference!

is it blowing black smoke (ie running rich)! has it been getting even poorer fuel economy than usual!

Its the motor /valve guides getting tired, alot of middle age mitsi do this, not worth fixing.
