What oil to use?

s.patete, Jul 3, 11:14pm
I need to do an oil change on both our cars and thought Id check if anyone can recommend a good grade/brand to use.I was probably just going to get something like magnatec for both cars, a 94 ford laser and a 98 falcon.

Do not go buying flash synthetic oils for older cars . Use a basic 20/40 oil for older cars . Castrol from the warehouse works as good as any . Do change the oil filters .

mobil 1 everytime; cheap is just that

johnf_456, Jul 3, 11:25pm
Define old!

nz2293, Jul 3, 11:28pm
when your kids argue with you and win wrong kinda old ok anything 90s or older

carkitter, Jul 3, 11:28pm
It depends on the age and condition of the engines.
If their in good condition and well maintained then a good quality semi-synthetic oil in a wide viscosity range like 15W-40, 10W-40 or 10W-30 will protect the engines well while improving driveability, economy and performance. On the other hand, if they are worn with loose tolerances and consuming oil a cheaper, thicker oil will be less likely for find it's way into the exhaust which is a good thing. Use your judgement.

How cold does it get in Palmy! 0W, 5W or 10W oil may be best for very cold/icy conditions. I'm not sure what OEM oil specs are for Falcons but they are likely to suit hot, dry, aussie conditions so should be taken with a grain of salt.

1.6 laser and a 6 cyl flacon,so a cheep 20/40 will be fine then, if anyone changes oil and doesnt do the filter they shouldnt be changing oil lol.And I wouldnt class them as old either, not new but def not old, just good cheep cars that we dont have to worry to much about.

carkitter, Jul 3, 11:33pm
I would define old for Jap cars as 2 or 3 valves per cylinder.
16 valve 4cyl engines from 1986/87 on can be considered modern IMO. Anything electronically fuel injected is modern.

s.patete, Jul 3, 11:33pm
The laser has just ticked over 100,000 ks so mght look at a semi for that, the falcon has just ticked over 250,000 so just worn in lol

s.patete, Jul 3, 11:34pm
and the laser is a carby motor

carkitter, Jul 3, 11:36pm
I wouldn't use a 30/40 or 20/40 oil in any car I was attached to. 20W-50 would be the minimum and even then you'll find it won't like revs.

30/40 and 20/40 oil is for dungers on their last legs.

jasongroves, Jul 3, 11:37pm
I would say 15w-40 would be a happy medium for both;)

s.patete, Jul 3, 11:38pm
Neither are on their last legs, so maybe look at 10 or 15w40 for both!

s.patete, Jul 3, 11:41pm
Sweet done 15w40 it is, cheers guys

I well remember a fleet of sretch LTD lmos thatcompany was talked into putting mobil 1 in . They startedto burn oil & run rough after 100km .So went back to mineral10w 50. & they settled down againsogave their service agent the boot .

That's right. Mobil 1 is a great oil for high-revving multivalve engines which the Falcon six is not. 10W-40 or 15W-40 semi-synthetic Castrol or Valvoline would be fine for the Laser but I would check the specs for what best suits the Falcon. My guess would be a 20W-50 good quality mineral oil as Falcons don't rev anyway.

15/50 -- 20/50 slows down my Surf & makes it a little harder to start.

15/40 is perfect for all year round for me & STILL a good choice for most vehicles being used domestically regardless of age.

BUT of course high performance factory cars are a bit different as is heavy usage vehicles

Mobil 1 can improve horsepower by up to 20% over lesser oils as can other high-end oils from Castrol and Shell.

I had access to free 10W30 oil and put it into a 1981 Mitsi Sigma with a 2L 4G63 SOHC carby engine. It ran incredibly smooth, efficient and revved well. Over time it started to escape past the rings so I switched to Duckhams 20W-50 which I got cheap. It was like driving with the handbrake on so I switched back the next day.

mugenb20b, Jul 4, 12:48am
10W-30 for both.

tuttyclan, Jul 4, 1:27am
Did you go back to the 10w 30 or some thing a little heavier.
How many kms were on the Sigma when you tried it.
