The 2.6 engine is the largest of the Astron family which dates back to 1969. At the time it was quite ahead of its time with an alloy OHC cylinder head and patented 'silent shafts' but as time went on it got to be quite outdated. With a heavy crank, flywheel and rods, along with its under-square bore/stroke and conservative camshaft grind it doesn't like to rev out much. They can be opened right up with a more agressive camshaft and lightened internals but is quite expensive to do for not much gains. The 4G64 2.4L engine is much more compact and lighter, a more modern design and produces about the same power and torque with less fuel consumption - and it will go straight in place of where the 4G63 2.0L came out of.
