peace mrs Jazz

will leave you to it, get all the rest you need and make that man slave of yours do some valid work for a change while you recuperate

last time we spoke he reckoned I was a troll and should remain unfed but he'll keep, I know he'll be back soon

modie61, Jul 15, 4:33am
Thank you,i dont like the ds. I like the look of the new c3,prefer in black, damn hot if you ask me.

gracey_lain, Jul 15, 4:35am
Will do :-) He will be back soon!

gracey_lain, Jul 15, 4:35am
Hmmph. DS or dieeeeeeeeeeeee!

modie61, Jul 15, 4:36am
Mrs Jazz. Do you get a visit from a district nurse for your op site,or do you get driven to hospital for check ups, sorry im not too sure how far you guys are from hospital etc.
My better half is said nurse and was just asking.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 4:48am
Hmmmm it would seem Mrs Jazz has been busy.
modie, Mrs Jazz will get driven to the hospital tomorrow for her 10 day checkup and cast change. She went private (I took out a mechanical warranty on her) so not sure if that affects things. Grace hospital is not that far away, perhaps 30 minutes at most by Italian car. 55by Corolla.

With regard to the C3, I have not had one so can't comment very much. I would suggest rovercitroen may be of more help. In general with Citroens I have found them O.K but their design, especially with regard to ease of servicing is not anywhere near as good as the Italians and Germans. Not necessarily end of the world stuff but some oversights are just silly like having to remove an entire centre console to adjust the handbrake on some models etc.

The C3 is available in manual but I am not sure how prevalent they are in NZ. Good idea to be wary of the auto, I am not sure about the C3 but other citroens like the C5 use a stupid Japanese auto box that you can't change the fluid in easily and you can't access the filter without removing the transmission and splitting it apart.

The result is a completely ruined car as its only a matter of time (and not many km's) before the filter clogs and the transmission dies. This can happen any time from about 100'000km which is ridiculous.

Parts are O.K but you arn't spoilt with several good 3rd party importers like with Fiat or VW.

Good on you for thinking outside the square, just proceed with caution and drive the Grande Punto, Golf and others in your price range first.

Hope that helps!

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 4:52am
BTW, thanks all for the concern over my absence/health.

modie61, Jul 15, 4:53am
Ahh,thats more like it,thanks Jazz and welcome back,Mrs Jazz is well up to the task tho.
We already have the mk4 GTi,looking at upgrading, but wow what to buy that is better, its not easy.

modie61, Jul 15, 4:56am
We both work in the health industry, mrs m is in looking after humans,im looking after the transport maintainence of emergency vehicles.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 4:59am
Yes Mrs Jazz is very competent indeed! Although. while she does have an appreciation for the engineering I suspect all opinions may have a distinct bias towards colour, styling and the prevalence of interesting buttons to push.

If you havn't already, have a drive of a Mk5 Golf, even if its not a GTI. I agree the MK4 GTI is a hard act to follow though and many cars will have a very cheap feel to them by comparison.

If you don't mind 2 doors I have seen some 2004+ A3's (MK5 Golf in a different party dress) going really cheap, as in $7500 even the other day for a tidy one. (you can get them in 4 doors but not at that price)

Perhaps have a drive of a 156 and 147 Alfa too, different to the MK4 Golf but perhaps the change you are looking for. There are a few bargains turning up in the facelift versions, the 156 JTS is great with its efficient but quite sporty 2.0 Direct injection motor.

lol, its almost like he never left

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 5:03am
You could start your own ambulance service!
I figured you might have something to do with looking after such vehicles in past actually. I will pass on the verdict on the tendon OP for Mrs Modies interest when Mrs Jazz receives a new WOF and can road test it.

Apparently the OP is not that common as most people are diagnosed to late and the damage is too severe.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 5:03am
LOL. or should that be "Yap yap, bite, pee's in the corner"

modie61, Jul 15, 5:04am
Yes we would like a mk 5 but they are such a big step dollar wise. We still need 4 doors and Mrs M has a good friend with a 156,its got a selesspeed trans and we were put off by its operation. Mrs M is a good driver, doing about 30k a year so we need something quick but economical.

skin1235, Jul 15, 5:08am
lol

pleasure to see you back too !

modie61, Jul 15, 5:09am
Haha, yes ambos, hard on brakes, but ultra reliable if serviced well.
Paramedics, very good at picking any faults in their trusty steeds.
The Mercs are getting 400000ks before requiring a new engine, our local number 1 ambo, does 6k per week.
The new Euro 5 v6 diesel is so smooth and powerful, very impressed.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 5:11am
Keep half an eye on the Mk 5's anyway. I am starting to see the odd under10K example and given Mrs M's milage it may still work out the most economical option even if you borrow a little to top up the budget. The good thing with the Mk5 is they are particularly good to service, even the DSG is an easy home service which may appeal to you. You will likely get over 12 months between services on those too for your use so thats a plus as well.

I totally agree about avoiding the selespeed 156, however a manual 2.0 JTS 156 like mine is a good car. It would be a 2 year timing belt interval for you at those km's but then easy enough for you to do at home.

I suggest whatever you get have Mrs M give it a really good run on some coarse chip roads before purchasing. Even going newer some of the options may be a shock after the nice riding MK4.

Diesel and Direct Injection engines like the JTS Alfa and FSI Golf are the go for economy IMO. Just avoid the Mitsi and Toyota attempts obviously, and make sure you are happy running BP Ultimate as otherwise the direct injection advantage is mostly lost.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 5:16am
Always been a fan of Mercedes Diesels, I would push them more but the current shape Ducato's are such good value at the moment and for most peoples use (campervans etc) they are very good too IMO.

I am a little surprised though that you are only getting 400'000km to an engine, it must be the type of running as I have seen Sprinters (long haul courier) with over 1 Million supposedly on the original engine.

Just as well that N.0 1 Ambo is not a Hyundai. 2 1/2 weeks between services!

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 5:17am
Cheers, and thanks for starting the thread, its been a laugh.

outbidyou2, Jul 15, 5:17am
cmon, theyll get closer to two million

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 5:19am
Well, I have seen one on here with over 1.5 Million that was still going strong. But again, it was a long haul courier vehicle. Big difference between long hot runs by an owner/driver and an Ambulance getting thrashed from cold and on and off the gas with a heavy foot around town.

We have someone in the family who looks after a local volunteer bus service for the elderly etc. Its amazing how many clutches and other bits they go through. all down to the drivers abusing the vans (not necessarily intentionally, just not mechanically sympathetic). That and the type of running.

modie61, Jul 15, 5:19am
The Mercs are 2.1 Turbo and are driven hard most of the time, they also carry a load all the time, with 8 minutes to get to the job there is no mucking about,im based in Wgtn city. All vehicles are serviced every 15000k.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 5:23am
Yes, makes sense in that environment. Its a big pull up some of those hills with a full load and a foot on the floor too. 400'000km is probably excellent going for any engine under those conditions. Hang some car drivers get excited if their car is still going after 200'000km of light domestic duties.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 5:25am
Been great chatting modie, very interesting insight into what you do. I must call it a night now though. Hit me up anytime you want an opinion on some replacement options, if I am not about someone could probably drop me an email on your behalf.

Best of luck with the car shopping!
