BA falcon. Auto or manual

What would I know though, I've only overhauled several of them. They were phased out on FG, and were an option on earlier models as I said. Quite a few lease cars and the odd taxi have them from what I've seen. They aren't common for sure, but they are out there.

Either way though, it is a terrible trans - you want to avoid it at all costs!

I found the 5sp manual to be a really nice drive over the auto.

I had been looking at the turbo for some time but the lure of the 8 won the day. I get the new best next week, cant wait.

Anyone know the real world kw's of this car. It says 290kw but that could just be manufacture hype

Youre dreaming, where's a link surely between Aussie and nz you will find some for sale, an old sales brochure, something on the net.

chris_051 is usually right about Falcon stuff.

I thought the BA2 with a four speed auto was a bit of a barge and the bonnet of the car rose when changing gear like a boat lifting on a plane, due to the big steps between gears.

The BF Mk1 with6speed ZF is a lot smoother when changing gear in 'auto' mode. I suspect it never gets into 6th gear on the roads I drive on.

You will find BA Falcons (and other non BF,FG cars!) with 6 speed ZF 6HP26 trans in them in Australia, there was a bit of conversion phase when the Ford fans wanted to sample a 6 speed auto without buying the BF.

My preference would be for manual in a smaller lighter car eg. Nissan 350z, BMW, Audi etc

The XRs are fairly low to the ground and can scrape the underside in placeswhere a standard ride car would not.

Harden up ! get a manual.

pnh4, Aug 25, 9:09am
One could get a Comp virus off that,,,

v8_mopar, Aug 25, 7:06pm
Funny you should say that. I did

whqqsh, Aug 25, 7:40pm
Ive never felt Ive had 'no control' driving an auto. anyhoo, I dont have a preference, both have good & bad points & mainly depends on type of driving youll be doing most of the time

xpfairmont, Aug 26, 11:39pm
Auto if you are normal. Manual if you are an insecure ageing boyracer.
Also manuals are crap for towing.

chris_051, Aug 27, 12:01am
Only if you can't drive.
Ford rate the manuals to tow less, dunno why, they either don't have confidence in the drivers not shock loading the driveline, or their clutches are crap.

swfc1867, Aug 27, 12:33am
Get a manual. it's a good anti-theft device as most young kids these days can only drive autos!

mopsy3, Aug 27, 1:35am
BA's have tiptronic for manual gearshifts.

3tomany, Aug 27, 4:52am
given manual gearboxes are becoming very rare i would get the manual it may be your last chance to experience a genuine manual box in a v8

gunhand, Aug 27, 5:05am
True, there like something out of a 1965 Massy Fergason. Everyone should experince one, then get a jap manual.

trouser, Aug 27, 7:38am
Because of the clutch. Warranty issues and all that.

3tomany, Aug 27, 8:42am
no no a jap manual is what makes autos so popular there is bugger all differance

lazzo, Aug 27, 1:52pm
I have a BF XR8 in the 6 speed Auto and it's absolutely magic! I wouldn't go back to a manual again.
