Hi, Recently got a 2006 Corolla for the other half, has the 1800 vvti motor and have been told these need a special oil in them, what is the best to use!

Mobil 1! Thats what I have been told to use in my VVT-i (1.0l) and I believe it is worth the $$ (about $90 for 5l I think)

its not a "special" oil exactly Its just that you must use the correct viscocity, The recommended is 5w40 although I'd be ok with 10w 40 as long as the temperature doesn't get really cold

oil becomes "special" if bought from dealer at inflated price

I had a Fielder 1800S, gave it an oil change every 10000kms,never used a `special` oil .The engine was still like a new 1 when I sold it at 220000kms.From memory I used a 10-40 ,SM rated oil.

At work (Toyota Dealership) we use Castrol products and the oil we use in those cars is Magnatec Professional 10W30. Service intervals are 12mths or 15000kms.

i'll think you'll find that car manu are using lower & lower viscosity oils ( thinner )to cut down on oil drag = friction, to improve fuel consumption.
