Kinda sound like when you spin a bicycle wheel and put a plastic ruler in spokes. When it's driving it's going and in drive. Seams to get louder in that moment when you take your foot off the gas while your driving just before you touch the brake if that makes sense, like a surge sort of thing. Vehicle drives fine but is using a wee bit of oil.

Any ideas would be great or suggestions if a good mechanic east or south Auckland

The rubber drive plate on the front of the motor that drives the fan assembly wears and will make a similar noise to what youre describing. With the motor off try rotating it by hand. If it has a slackness before it takes up thats your problem.It will be just knocking backward and forward.

I thought that 2001 Previa had an East / West engine driving front wheels. The one you are thinking of is the mid mount motor, in the older shape Previa.
