yup. They dont have the same taxes as we do. Apparently the base oil content of the pump price is much the same worldwide, before local tax is applied

The old USA cars are very inefficient, but even the new 6200cc Camaro's achieve 25 MPG due to new technology of shutting down cylinders when not needed. To put that in perspective, a 1980 Cortina 2000cc achieved 24MPG

There is a $4.00 title fee; an $8.00 registration fee; plus an air quality research fee of $1.50; and a vehicle license tax (VLT) assessed in place of a personal property tax charged by other states. There may also be a weight fee and commercial registration fee, if the vehicle is registered as commercial.
The VLT is based on an assessed value of 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price reduced by 16.25% for each year since the vehicle was first registered in Arizona (15% before 8/1/98). Then, as of the Dec 1, 2000 reduction, the rate is calculated as $2.80 (new vehicles)/$2.89 (used vehicles) for each $100 of the assessed value. For example, for a new vehicle that costs $25,000, the first year assessed value would be $15,000 and the VLT would be $420.00. The second year the assessed value would be $12,562.50 and the VLT would be $363.06.
Then it's about $1500-$2,500 for car insurance.But they also need mandatory car insurance like you do in Australia, although I think their one could be more comprehensive.

I lived in Arizona for 4 years in the 90's and drove a 1985 thunderbird (value approx $2000US) and paid $200US per month to insure it. In contrast, I now pay $800NZ to insure my $70,000 car for a full year in NZ. My point is, insurance is VERY expensive in the USA.

^^ there is no mandatory car insurance in Australia. There is compulsory third party insurance which gets paid with your registration, but it only covers personal injury - it is basically like the ACC levy content of rego in NZ.

Assuming those quoting numbers above are correct, seems to me fees and insurance will more than wipe out any advantage in fuel price.
I'd also rather live in a country that doesn't have a publicly visible homeland security threat level.

certinally both are a lot cheaper than in the states
norway is a wealthy country, but has the worlds most expensive
