Is buying a European people mover a bad move in terms of costly maintenance?

We are looking at buying a people mover type vehicle. On a daily basis we will use just 3 seats in the back and want them to all have full seatbelts. We also need a big boot space for bikes and push chairs etc, but want to have the ability to take extra kids from time to time safely in a full 3 point seatbelt.
I have looked heaps on line and it seems none of the jap imports can do it and something like a VW Tourna, Opal Zafira or Subaru Traviq would be the right fit for our needs. Only problem is every one I mention this to (including hubby) are weary of Euro imports and the ongoing maintenance costing allot due to specialist service and parts required. Any thoughts?
