Probably by the stream of engine oil dripping down your boot.

In an older car -given the heater was working fine to start with You would expect turning the heater on full blast would add one extra radiator and radiator fan to the cooling system.If the car is loosing water then the lack of hot water in the radiator will mean the heater stops blowing hoit.Often well in advance of the temp gauge.

Fuggit mon Im from the generation where an oil stain on the jeans was par for the course and jeans got the "stonewashed look" from being washed a millionb times.
