Older trailers of about 10 years & more are not normally an issue.
Brand new trailers 1st reg in about the last 5 years probably will get nailed for having the plate on the guard.
lights & number place are spose to be no more then (I think) 150mm from the face of the lights to the back edge of the deck.

Thats how it was for many years, not sure on the exact measurement now

Ordinary and personalised registration plates

A motorcycle, moped, tractor or trailer plate must be fixed securely in an upright position on the rear of the vehicle and displayed so that all the characters (numbers and letters) are clearly visible at all times.W.O.F requirement is a number plate light ,that doesn't shine a white light to the rear and illuminates plate so it can be read from 20 metres at night
