Any diff oil specialists about?

Holden VS, LSD, non IRS, quiet running diff, but clicking, or notching on the cones when turning.Oil level ok, but needs a change - oil choice looks to be SAF-XA castrol or nulon HD limited slip 80W140.Anybody had any experience in this area!Cheer

Use the Castrol in my Falcon XR8 with LSD, works wonders! But damn expensive!

Meh. as far as *diff oil* goes it's hypoid-simply meaning the pinion is lower than the crown wheel centre.
And L Sfor limited slip.
Hypoid oils actually burn in use and the actual ash from the burning is what does the lubrication.
So yeah an oil change will help-however age and mileage in a holden cone slippery generates wear.cone faces.get a bit rough with age.
So In My Opinion tis more of a strip and lap cone and retension springs and reshim specialist ya talkin boot than an oil specialist.

You could try this:
http://drbritton.co.nz/supers/gearoil/limited-slip-additive-for-gl-5-gear-oils.htm

I know Transdiesel sell it, not too sure who else has it.

She's only 138k and still factory all round. For a 2000 and the k's, she's had a quiet life.Am trying to avoid tightening the diff, but understand there's no such thing as a mechanic in a bottle - I might try the Nulon stuff as a stop gap til I can do a proper job.Anybody actually got their hands on some Sturaco 7089!

The parts dept at the local Holden dealer should have or if not still be able to get the Holden additive.
Most quality diff oils have the correct additive in them- Redline diff oil does & we used to use that for years when overhauling Holden diffs at the Holden dealer

mr.anderson, Dec 28, 9:12am
on average what's involved!I've read about having to get internals machined and shims made to suit!Any tips you can share!

That's true, most diff oils have the correct additives based on the application. For some reason a small percentage of late model Hiluxes I think it was had diff chatter. Some did, some didn't, no-one could explain why but the use of the additive I mentioned in my post above, solved the problem when it did arise.

can you fix your link chris - comes with an error when I click on it, cheers

treachug, Dec 28, 9:42am
Sorry no - I was in the parts side of it.take it to a reputable diff specialist in your area - the dealer will only outwork it & clip the ticket on the way through.

1052358 was the genuine holden part number for the additive. Many oil companies make an equivalent meeting the same spec
