You can tow an auto if ya leave it idling. And in neutral.
The only small concern with a manual, is that the load would be on the opposite face of the gears. But as mentioned - it has never been a big problem, maybe it caused a box to crap out. Maybe there was no oil for a start.

thay sort of said that with the motor not running nothing would be turning in the box just the output sharft do you think to get it checked further!

we towed a rav 4 manual 1994 model around the south island all over the place and back up to Kerikeri with no problems must have covered 1000s kms we are now towing a 1995 rav behind our bus go for it

Are you worried about the effect on the Rav or are you worried that the frontal impact rules wont allow you to fit the A-frame!
