can a 1994 rav4 be towed on a a-frame there seems to be some changes made in 2010 with what can be towed bit confused with year and weight

msigg, Feb 6, 12:15am
I think you can tow most things with an A frame, the problems arise with the gearbox not circulating oil in the towed vehicle.

robbief, Feb 6, 1:07am
thanks for that i will have to check that out

johnf_456, Feb 6, 1:40am
only really with automatics.

msigg, Feb 6, 1:57am
No john you do get problems with manual as well, I know someone that did just this to their datsun 1200 towiing from Auckland to Taupo, bun't out gearbox, so don't assume all is equal. Do research.

^^well see quite a few camper vansA frame towing SUV s behind them .Cant see how it would be a problemthe lay gearsconstantlyturning if car is moving , there by picking up oil &spreading itovermain shaft & gears

martin11, Feb 6, 2:16am
Rubbish gears will still be moving the oil around ,many large vans have little 4x4 behind in Aus with no problems

msigg, Feb 6, 2:21am
Yes well the rav might be ok I don't know about that one , but car can be a problem. Talk to your transmission specialist first. That's the best advice.

robbief, Feb 6, 2:29am
thanks for the help its a manual so gears should get oil with gears going around

stevo2, Feb 6, 2:29am
Most small SUV's towed behind campers are Suzukis because they have a Hi/lo transfer box that can be left in neutral therefore meaning the whole drive train is not spinning.

desmodave, Feb 6, 2:34am
Would a single axle car trailer be a better option ! it would save a lot of wear on the car .

johnf_456, Feb 6, 3:10am
firstly dont name call it isnt nice and that is why i said really (mainly) rather than saying only automatics!

NZTools, Feb 6, 3:23am
If the layshaft is mounted at the top of the gearbox it often doesn't get the front bearing lubricated well if it is only the tailshaft slinging oil.

smac, Feb 6, 3:35am
The issues you may have heard about relate to what vehicles can have changes made to the front of the vehicle to fit an A frame. It all relates to frontal impact standards. Motor Caravan Association seems to be best source of up to date info.

Yip.

Best post so far In My Opinion.

Oh and as to the common everyday speed hump-[don't name call]

You'd be a bit of a sensitive droob if you were a sunken-chest wannabe like him.

morrisman1, Feb 6, 4:57am
Why would that matter, the front bearing isn't turning when its sitting in neutral with engine not running. As long as the layshaft is getting its bearings lubricated then all should be fine and dandy.

NZTools, Feb 6, 5:38am
I was talkin about the front bearing of the layshaft

thewomble1, Feb 6, 11:54am
No difference to the car being towed ifusing a rope or a 'A' frame except when using a rope you will need an extra driver. Won't be able to use 'A' frame if the towed vehicle is an automatic.

robbief, Feb 6, 6:54pm
this is a nanual and what is the impact law when it has a chassie!

desmodave, Feb 6, 7:16pm
And if that automatic has the transfer case placed in neutral while being towed whats the problem.

mrfxit, Feb 6, 8:18pm
Towed many many vehicles over many years & NEVER ever had issues with gearbox's, auto OR manual
Auto's were towed no faster then 50kph MAX & only for about 5km's distance max (normally across town)
Manuals had been towed anything up to 400km's in 1 trip.

.
When in doubt or misquoted .>>
LOOK UP THE MANUAL or even better RING TOYOTA about towing recommendations.

(Caps for the nearly blind)

robbief, Feb 7, 5:42am
rang the toy motor shop and there is no problem said go for it thanks for all the help

cowlover, Feb 7, 5:50am
Hope you got that in writeing.May not be a problem but if there is it will be expensive.
