Boat Trailers - Help please.

Can anyone tell me what modifications are allowed, if any, for a boat trailer! For instance, can you legally cut a boat trailer down in order to fit a smaller boat on it! I'm talking a backyard DIY'er here. Also, does a boat trailer need both a warrant of fitness and be registered, for the road!

Yes you can alter them, Only basic regs about trailers, So long as bearing, coupling lights are good, no rust you should be good to go.

If you're altering it for a smaller boat, then consider weight distribution/balance.
The strut that supports the winch and vee block thing for the bow might need to be shifted back a bit, otherwise you'll end up with too much weight on the draw-bar (as the bulk/centre point of the boat will be further forward when winched up fully).Alternatively, the axles may be able to be shifted - but that's probably going to be harder to do.
It's something you need to check out, as too much or too little weight on the drawbar will cause you potentially dangerous problems when towing.

The only 3 things you need to worry about are .

Sound construction methods
Suitable balance & strength for the intended load
Complies with std trailer wof regs
