I would say anything japanese of that era would be more reliable and have better resale.

Heard the autos are weak. Expect repairs. A poor little brother to the golf. If she's got her heart set on it then get an independent VW specialist to inspect and then you will know if it's worth the gamble.

Is it a golf or a polo? Two different cars. Mechanically similar so same advice , get it checked by VW friendly mechanic and ensure serviced well. Otherwise there ate no particular problems, in most parts of the world these are very well respected and considered reliable and solid, we have a wee bit of Japanese bias here.

If it's a Polo of that vintage, I don't think even the #1 fan (absent in this forum for the time being) would have anything good to say. However, as it's probably worth less than $1k, and if it's still running with WOF and reg for that kind of money, it's hopefully not the end of the world if it all turns to custard. The same applies for most sub $2k cars unless you get very lucky, as it's a lottery.
Edit - oops - $2.5k? No, Run.

A wee bit of Japanese bias? Wow, wouldn't want to see a lot of it. the board should be renamed "if it aint Toyota don't bother. " lol
Golf of that era I'd say worth a crack at that money--subject to a full PP inspection and Proof of servicing. Polo Think time bomb --tick tick tick.

No, I don't see it. Apart from the typo that looks clean ' there are no particular problems' . What's up?

If you have to place the thread title like "How bad are they?" then that introduces doubt to mind right there and pretty much answers your own question?

For $2500, there are much safer options out there than buying a 17 year old Polo.

Buy a Corolla of the same vintage for the same money and then resell it for the same price in a couple of years.

Amen. But we'll done OP for going down the track of getting it looked at and deciding it's not for you.
