Porsche 944 engine

My (late) mothers Porsche 944 broke the cambelt recently - probably due to a lack of use and old age as it didn't see much use . It also had overheating problems a few months prior due to old hoses and it appears something may have seized causing the belt to break according to the mechanic who had a look at it. It hasn't been pulled down as I am looking at options of sell it for parts, or fix it. Other than the motor, it is in good condition and straight.
Assuming the worst (and with the cost of parts for these things the worst can be really bad. ) anyone know where I can find another motor for one. I assume it is an interference engine which would not be a good thing for the top end. I have found exchange heads, valves etc overseas, but the cost of parts is adding up to be a large sum.

I wouldn't be jumping to conclusions until the rocker cover has been off and the cam, rockers, valve spring heights etc have been checked, it could be salvageable. Something tells me those engines are, or at least have common parts with, Audi engines of the era which may be easier to source.

Yes they are an interference engine. Good luck with it another engine would be the way to go but in saying that pull the head to see what state the pistons & cylinder bores are in.
You might get lucky and get away with just a head replacement, I've got my doub'ts though?

or may be a quad rotor.
or may be Ralliart in Pkohe could put a Mitzi 4b11t in it.

what year and model 944? There are many different engines fitted from the 2.5 SOHC 8V through to the 3.0L DOHC 16V and then add in the turbo applications too.

Early Mitsubishi 4g63t is a repower option

That's the 924 (which essentially shared the same body).

The guys you need to talk to are Europacific Independent Porsche Specialists in Pirongia, just out of Hamilton. They stock new parts as well as having the biggest selection of 2nd hand parts in the country.

They have a huge wealth of knowledge about old Porsches and they don't charge like a wounded bull because of the badge on the front.

It is the 2.5l 8v I think. I will need to check the model code - certainly the 8v one.
I dropped an email to europacific, and the have a 2nd hand motor for $4400ish or head for $1250 xchange, with labour, gaskets etc it will not be a cheap repair either way. 944online.com has a good parts fiche and info.
Need to make a call on the eithr way soon

$4400 for a used motor! Ouch! So much for not charging like a wounded bull. You could probably pick up a whole 944 for not much more than that!

If the body and interior are still tidy it would be worth hanging onto until you can fix it in your own time or find a suitable engine to repower it with.

LOL, I couldn't agree with you more!
I did a head job on my brothers turbo 944 some years back, (thankfully he sold it and bought a CSL M3 shortly after) talk about an expensive overly difficult nightmare but it sure was fun to pedal.
A 4G63T re-power would be my pick.

Try fitting a new belt and see if it starts, it might just need the head off and a few belt valves replaced.
