Would thieves have a preference to break into and steal from luxury cars such as Audi, BMW, Lexus,Mercedes, Volvo than Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan etc during holiday season? Especially at tourist destinations and popular hiking/walking spots.

I doubt there is a preference really. A lot of high end cars are broken in to for goodies left in glovebox/consoles. Low end cars are for goodies & joyrides. Depends on where you park, dark or well lit places, how much foot traffic etc.

I often launch a small boat at Tokaanu. This time of year, its quite busy, and you don't have much trouble.
But in winter, my car got broken into several times, costing me a window each time.
Now I just leave it obviously unlocked.
I still get the contents of the glove box strewn everywhere. But I can wind the window back up, instead of needing to get a new one.
