Old school mechanic wanted in Oamaru

kevlight, Apr 12, 9:58am
Have a MAXI out of long term storage;car rego is on hold ,(car is UK 1500 and one owner) we want a mechanic to pump up suspension and free up brakes, and perhaps a tickle here and there to bring up to WOF standard,is there a mechanic familiar with these old cars in Oamaru; thanks KEv

Maybe Lance Doran Automotive. They are the Mazda service agent, but they have some older guys working there and I am sure I've seen old British cars parked out front on occasion.

Also maybe Rod Tempero.

Biggest problem might be finding a garage which has the pump for the suspension. The rest of the work should be able to be completed by any competent mechanic.

I think it's called hydrolastic suspension, left and right systems and not just a tyre gauge to pump up and hoping no major leaks, clutches can also rust/stick solid to flywheel and pressure plate if sat a long time.

Try Gillies Service Centre in Ouse St, they were the agents for Austin ~ BMC etc.

GT Gillies, Austin /Morris division dosn't exist anymore,That is where Maxis were sold and serviced.Any other Automotive workshop with a hyd/pump should be able to help you. Those pumps are still about.Prob more so around Oams. There is One x Gillies Automotive engr at North Otago motors group .or maybe retired now ,he a owned Maxi 1750 his daily car. &.was the head poncho at GT Gillies Austin dept(Maurice) / Ol Tempro is of no help! or try Waimate for a pump.

Hi Goose, Gillies would be my first call, hopefully they didnt throw there pump gear away when they moved to Ouse street.

Its a weird non specific term used by young people who cant define it themselves. You tend to think RWD non computer controlled cars with metal bumpers but I've heard it applied to a 1988 Galant VR4 before today, which is amusing to say the least. I spose if you were born after 1990 or so it probably is.

go see geoff at smash palace. that old bugga will know someone to recommend.:)

mrfxit, Apr 13, 3:20am
Probably applied to anything thats older then the person stating "old school" but they themselves only born around middle of 1980's

i think you may find he is "unavailable" that day.

Tempro are body builders first & formost you'll find they never wanted a pump or need or even have one ! Nothing they did involved hydralastic suspension,or at least Rods Dad was of that view from what I remember then.

Ye gads that expensive. Back in the day I made my own with an old landrover clutch master cylinder and a bit of kiwi knowhow.

This is the tricky bit you need

This is the only type of pump I have ever used or seen in NZ , a change over 2 way valve will change flow to pump the height down if needed as well as pump up ,use a measuring tape from a flat ground to the bottom of the mud guards for measurement or top of the wheel to the bottom of guard equal all around the car. These pumps are still about have seen them in country garages and at auctions.
