5w-40 or 5w-30 full synthetic oil of any reputable brand should be sufficient, but better if it meets the BMW specification.

I use Penrite Synthetic in my BMW, Castrol coolant.

Is there a record of what's it's had in past? If it was right spec stay with it.

I always use Shell Helix Ultra in my 323, look for an oil with LL-01 spec mentioned on it. And for coolant, definitely get the proper stuff from BMW.
