Mid 90s diesel pajero vs bighorn?!

j_fung9007, Feb 7, 11:11am
hi, thinking of getting a diesel 2.8 pajero manual or 3.1 diesel bighorn manual .any pros and cons on them? i used to have a bighorn auto only for a month, i noticed the engine likes to rev a lot with or without towing a caravan . quite like the look on the pajeros, is only the GDI engines that are crap right? in terms of power/torque, which one is better?

Id go for the pajero if every thing else is equal. 4m40 (2.8) is a better motor than the 4jg2 3.1

x1
Bighorn has a better engine even though it has a cambelt but not as powerful as Pajero's 4m40. Isuzu has a bit more interior space and two doors to access the boot. I'd pick the Bighorn.

Pajero. Bighorns are Just a cheaper bit of kit. However, I imagine a bighorn would be lots cheaper so usual buy the best you can get rule might apply. If a big horn with low km great service history is same price as run down Pajero.
Neither has the reputation of a land cruiser though. Both should be better than a discovery.
Unless you do go off-road neither! They all handle like shit, are heavy, burn gas, waste space.

Plus come on who wants a car thing called a bighorn? Have some dignity.

j_fung9007, Feb 7, 2:12pm
what about manual gearbox? are they quite reliable?

mugenb20b, Feb 7, 2:25pm
I guess you don't know what Pajero means in Spanish?

ok few facts 1. a 90s vehicle is 25 years old + minus
also fact 2 . general rule was mitsubishi from 90s are all bad and toyota where the bees knees
fact 3. any japanese diesel from the 90s was a gutless heap unless it had a huge mother engine and a turbo charger .
i would overtake any japanese diesel with or without turbo solong it had no electronic fuel pumps with my non turbo fully mechanical fiat tipo 1,7 diesel
Any euro diesel had way more power then the japanese with no turbo

fact 4. a payero thats still ok now must be either not to bad or its been stored or repaird nomerous times .

We as mechanics have a saying when it comes to early Mitsubishi diesels " Its going to blow " . Its not a matter of if but when !
The Isuzu while slow should just keep on keeping on !

tsjcf, Feb 7, 3:44pm
If you can find a tidy one the 96/97 bighorns(Facelift model). were nice trucks.
Cooling system needs to be checked overheating was the biggest killer on the 4JG2 motor. A manual transmission is good if u can find but the auto was ok if serviced and had a cooler fitted. Some have the Isuzu TOD systems check that it works correctly. Power wise they go well used to be a few round with bigger exhausts, bit more fuel/ boost they went really well.

gmphil, Feb 7, 3:56pm
il take the izuzu of mitzy see If u can find a lotus edition little bit nicer.
as said above only thing that kills them lack of maintenance . now u cant blame vehicle now for that . clean cooling system maintained should see u rite

Living with either is like living with a venereal disease these days but on balance probably the Bighorn when talking sheer drivetrain reliability. The rest of it is similar quality. I would agree with, No receipts/evidence of good service of EVERYTHING, not just the motor, and especially no clean cooling system=no sale. Too much grief down the track otherwise.

gmphil, Feb 7, 4:24pm
only the youth now it bein reclassified now from disease to infection so u will need Subaru for that sti .
still would rather be known for my bighorn or trooper or a trooper with my bighorn than at home alone being a pajero !

twincam1, Feb 7, 4:31pm
You do know Pajero in Spanish is wanker?

kazbanz, Feb 7, 5:28pm
both are getting old. I feel it will come down to the mechanical condition of the specific vehicle.
IMO though the old 3.2 Isuzu was a better vehicle mechanically than the mitzi.
Incidently--try also Honda Horison and Holden (darn can't remember the model name) both ARE bighorns with different badges

franc123, Feb 7, 5:33pm
Monterey is Holdens UBS Bighorn. The snag with Montereys is that from what I've seen of the very few of them about is that Isuzus catastrophic 4JX1 is under the bonnet. Come back Mitsi diesel all is forgiven best sums those up.

mals69, Feb 7, 6:37pm
3.2 Bighorn over a Mitzi, had my 92 terrano for ten years 60k clicks and spent $110 on repairs - reason why a good one still goes for good $

j_fung9007, Feb 9, 2:17am
what about the 4M41 3.2L Di-D engines in the 2000 or newer Pajero? are they still crap?!

monaro17, Feb 9, 2:29am
No the 3.2DID engines are fantastic. Really good engines

echoriath, Feb 9, 3:13pm
Very helpful thread as I am thinking of getting a mid-90s Bighorn. I'm nor terribly good under the hood, so was going to have pre-purchase inspection by AA. Reckon it's worth it at $149?

Vehicle has 216k KM with new cam belt at 210k, but owner has been out of country for about a year with vehicle sitting idle. Ran well for test drive.

franc123, Feb 9, 3:21pm
No, take it to a diesel and/or 4x4 specialist and get them to give it a good going over, they'll be able to tell pretty quick if its been abused. Late 90s Bighorns can be quite cheap to buy, but you have to be sure of what you are buying. Don't go near the 3.0 diesel (3.1 is OK) versions at all.

+1 very nice engines indeed brother had a 3.2 DID that had done 300,000ks and still went like new, the 4M40's are good engines if you don't get them hot (goes for all diesels really) you see a lot of high km 4M40s around that are still running fine.
