In board boat motor

how do you stop condensation in rocker cover which makes oil milky .there are breather pipes which connect to underside of aircleaner. its a 350 chev.

Blown head gasket.? Replace the gasket ?

its a recondition motor 30 hrs ago.

Ive had the same in car engines a few times. not always a blown headgasket often just condensation from heat cycles. same as moisture in the exhaust.

engines that dont get alot of heat in them i.e. the school run cars are prone to it.

Id usually say get it nice and hot for a decent long blat and alot will evaporate/burn off, especially if you have a breather system.

Im not an expert on boat motors but it could be over cooling if its not thermostat controlled hence not getting up to temp.

If its really milky ive found that getting it hot then draining and replacing oil is the only way to flush it all out. i did this on both an mr2 and a ford telstar and with a good quality oil and decent running trips it never came back.

It takes a lot of water to make oil milky. Id get a teekay test done while there is some chance of a warranty claim.

Also check the pcv valve etc is opening to allow air to breath out naturally.

oil is only milky on top of heads sump oil ok.

check the valve, often the pipes are so sludged up they cannot suck through them, consider also, on a boat they do not get to the high heat they get on the highway, it may need a valve and pipe to each bank

skin1235, Jun 16, 2:42am
did you get it running yet, what was wrong, why wouldn't it start

unclejake, Jun 16, 4:41am
I'd be inclined to fit a (warmer) thermostat. or go back to steel rocker covers

does it have an oil cooler? Maybe it is keeping oil too cold, or perhaps it is leaking sea/lake water into the oil.

first thing, make sure it has a thermostat, some marine versions of car engines run a 140 degree thermostat if raw water cooled as that's just below the temp the salt separates from seawater, sounds like you have condensation that is not evaporating when the engine heats up,try leaving the oil filler cap off when its running if oil isn't coming out

Had same problem ,changed rocker covers to covers that had breathers both ends with valves and connected to other bank front and rear with K&N in centre. Looks crapp with all the hoses and filters BUT no more milky oil. Motor builder said it would never fix the problem but it has.And yes tempture is important that you get it right, running 160 degree min through heat exchanger in LS2 in 28footer
