Australia's worst cars

Sorry mate but you're very much mistaken. The V6 into the 1983-1988 shape Galant/Sigma was not produced or let alone even sold in Australia. Their first FWD V6 was the TR series Magna in 1990. That advertising campaign you are referring to with a V3000 towing a tank was done in NZ using the V3000 as it was known here. In Japan it was either the Galant Duke V2000 or V3000 depending on engine size, and in the US it was simply called the Sigma.

Plus the lighter flywheel

Sorry yes missing info.
I was told they were built in Aussie for the NZ market.
Wasn't there also a 1600cc v6 version?

phillip.weston, Sep 21, 4:40am
No they were assembled in Porirua for the V3000 87-90 box shape, and the 90 onwards V3000 that was a up-spec Magna (called Verada in Aus) was assembled in Aus. The E17A/E18A Galant Duke and the Sigma destined for the US market were assembled in Japan.

also 1.6L V6 is the 6A10 engine for the 91-95 shape jap model Lancer and Mirage sedans only.

Saw an 88 series wedge body in Hamilton that was spose to have the 1600 v6.
Different grill etc but same wedge body.

My 3ltr v6 5sp was badged a GLX Galant (ex cop going on repairs done showing with age).
Very basic version.

I think you're mistaken. the smallest V6 Mitsubishi made in the 80s was the 6G71 2.0L SOHC and was fitted to the Jap E17A Galant Duke V2000 or the S12A Debonair V6 (some were even supercharged, very rare though).

That 'wedge' shape was never sold as a Galant in NZ so I highly doubt it was registered as a Galant GLX. It was either a Sigma for the 4cyl 1.8/2.0L variants or V3000 for the 3L V6. You could buy an Eterna 2.4L 4cyl hard top brand new in the late 80s but they were assembled in Japan and made to order, much like the NZ-new early 90s Diamante with quad cam V6 engine and 4WD (yes, these existed).

Unless some one had the motivation to put a Galant badge on it that car should have been badged V3000.

phillip.weston, Sep 21, 8:00am
That's what I'm thinking - unless someone did the dodgy and swapped plates and tags from a 1988 Galant GLX which is the next generation up with the 1.8L 4cyl engine.

And to what benefit. V3000 would seem to be the better badge :) or none at all

Plus 4 came out in bright yellow also.

The original bootlid could have been damaged and someone simply fitted a used lid off an import wedge Galant of the same era as our 84-88 FWD Sigma. Being ex MOT the original lid could have had at least one redundant aerial hole in it.
