adds about 10 seconds to the time it takes to steal your car.

I made one for our old Sigma. Tube fits over handbrake, padlock fits around gear lever. Handbrake couldn't be released without removing the tube first, after unlocking the padlock. Car never stolen!

Just lock it, don't park is crap areas, Valubles out of site. Is it highly desirable? If a thief wants it they will take it. I think a gps tracker is best way of getting it back

Buy British. No one ever steals them. You can leave old ones or new ones unlocked - except maybe for full house race/rally Ford Escorts.
Don't leave valuables in any car.
For me, a couple of hidden switches to fuel pump and coil will foil the casual theft of the car, but nothing stops the real pros who drag the car onto a low loader and have the complete thing stripped within hours or in a shipping container heading overseas - though how they manage that is beyond me.

Leave a Caucasian Shepherd in your car, no one will go within 20 meters of it let alone try and steal it.

That's a clever idea. I always park mine on full lock. Know how much of a pain it is trying to load something with the wheels turned and locked even a bit
