Adding USB to factory audi head unit

kazbanz, Feb 27, 6:45pm
its a 1998 head unit. so 17 years old.
you have to do as much work to convert it as to fit a new head unit.
if it then dies (unlikely) you are stuck with nothing again--id bite the bullet and fit a new head unit

Yes, tending towards that conclusion, thanks.

Most head units I've seen will provide 1amp through the USB port - probably still not enough to keep up with a large screen smartphone

Just a note >>>>
Most usb ph wall chargers vary between 800ma & 2amps.
Even the tablets generally only use a 5v x 2amp charger.

Can't really help you, but we a a head unit with a USB input. Not only can we use it to play music but can charge ipods phones, ipads etc no problems.

Yeah it works. but it's sooooooooo slow. You have to go for a five hour drive to fully charge a phone. A dedicated charger is the way ahead.
