its a 1998 head unit. so 17 years old. you have to do as much work to convert it as to fit a new head unit. if it then dies (unlikely) you are stuck with nothing again--id bite the bullet and fit a new head unit

Most head units I've seen will provide 1amp through the USB port - probably still not enough to keep up with a large screen smartphone

Just a note >>>> Most usb ph wall chargers vary between 800ma & 2amps. Even the tablets generally only use a 5v x 2amp charger.

Can't really help you, but we a a head unit with a USB input. Not only can we use it to play music but can charge ipods phones, ipads etc no problems.

ive replaced 7 stereo/ 7 cars this year for same fellow as he wanted usb ports because the missus charges her I phone thru them ? not up with play don't now if works. must do I suppose !

Yeah it works. but it's sooooooooo slow. You have to go for a five hour drive to fully charge a phone. A dedicated charger is the way ahead.
