keep it as is. my tipo fiat has a gearleaver like a cream whipper also.

I'm gonna hazard a guess here since there's not been much response as yet. Does it have a cable operation? I THINK the manual one does so maybe this does too. If so first port of call is cables and joints. Might be lucky and find something easily fixable if you have a good look around. If someone can jiggle it inside while you peer under bonnets with light? If it is cables but looks ok at dirty bits end try pulling cover off selector and having a look. Try googling it too. If it is common it WILL be on Google. Jiggling it about often works.
