Hello how long to do a head gasket on a 2.6 petrol. Thanks

From 3 hours for a quick and dirty job that will fail for the same reason the current one failed. Though to 30 hours or more to do it properly and assuming head rebuild, block skimming etc. etc.

You are going to be up for 8-10hrs at least depending on what's gone wrong and why it happened. Its unlikely to be fixed with just a gasket replacement, being what it is you will have to get the head tested by a machine shop for bending, cracking or softness if its been running hot, plus pro radiator flush, new thermostat etc. They're well known for it.

As above I'd quote it on 12 hours provided the head will go again after testing and skimming.

The head is going to the reconditioner to get tested and resurfaced. It will be done properly. So 12 hours or there abouts. Is it a common problem with these motors? Thanks

If you are going to all that expense make sure you fit a new radiator, or get the old radiator rodded out by a professional, heads can fail due to dirty/clogged radiators and kiwis are bad for the she'll be right attitude. Never trust a radiator you don't know, they can be blocked internally. Add a few hundred at least for this, but its critical for engine health. Also new thermostat and the correct antifreeze for that engine as well.

Absolutely, there was a couple of variations in them depending on the age of the vehicle, but without going into too much detail they were basically an update of a early 70's Mitsubishi design. They were the most common here in the import Mazda Marvie Proceed models, Ford/Mazda were still offering them as an option in some models up until the Ranger and BT50 came out in 2006 believe it or not, but the gutless and thirsty rep they had affected sales. These head problems can of course affect any motor that's been mistreated or is simply old, some are more affected than others.

There were two 2.6 petrol engines offered by Ford/Mazda for the commercials in the 80s/90s. One is not an update of a Mitsubishi design - it simply IS a Mitsubishi engine - the G54B 8V 2555cc 'Astron' series. No Mitsubishi badging on the rocker cover, carburetor only and used for two years only in 1986-1988. Mazda then produced their own 2.6 which had 12 valves and was EFI. They are similar looking however the intake/exhaust swapped sides between the Mitsubishi G54B and the Mazda G6.
