Either a loose earth off the back of the alternator, or fluid getting in the alternator. For us it was power steering fluid getting into the alternator. Not a Mitsi though.

From memory I think when the light flickers it is one of the brushes either worn out and/or not contacting the slip ring properly.

inside the alternator of course.

Would have thought that if brush not contacting, dash light would be on all the time, anyway will check earth on alternator tomorrow--neighbours car, only done 130 clicks.

Yeah I should have said not contacting 'properly' which means it is contacting but the brush is not being pushed against the slip ring with the force it should have pushing against it. It has either lost tension through jamming in the carrier or through wear. The light flickers now and again.

See what the charging voltage is doing at the time when its flicking, it could be a regulator or even a rectifier pack getting dodgy. The latter can sometimes be picked up by the presence of a slight AC voltage across the terminals.

Does this happen only in daytime when they have been driving for some time?
Does it stop flashing if they turn the headlights on?

Quite common for a brush to stick in holder when almost worn out as it hangs in the holder. Being a Mitsi alternator, they do have other issues as well with similar results.

NB = If you find the alternator requires anything other than brushes then replace with genuine parts only as most compatible parts will not last.

Hang on. 12v at battery 14v at alternator. Blown fuse?

Yes ridiculousness has it in one, don't worry about it at this stage, eventually, maybe in 3 months or more it will fail completely and then just get a replacement, if you still have the car. Yea its either charging too much at a point or not charging at a point.

2003 should be bosch alternater. either slip ring worn or brush worn. rectifier and brush pack held on by 2 screws. cheap at local auto sparky or BNT.
