L200 engine temp

Hi all , I took a 96 l200 2.5d for a test drive today. The dash temp gauge doesn't work but it has an auto gauge hooked up . It took a while to get there but seemed to settle on 85-90 deg. Does this sound about right? Cheers

How long is a while? If it took more than 5-10 minutes on the road I'd be very suspicious that the thermostat was either stuck open or had been removed. If there was any vehicle on the road that you need to be 100% sure the cooling system is working properly and hasn't been 'played with' to hide a problem its those things. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES agree to buy one until an expert assessment has been done, for your own financial safety. This means a thorough drivetrain and cooling check and preferably a leakdown compression check and a good smoke test. Most of those really should be on the scrap pile by now, no matter how tidy they look.
