Anybody re-chipped a Ranger?

Had my PX1 Ranger chipped at about 210,000ks. Was awesome, heaps more power to tow 3 ton loads up hills. Unfortunately at 270,000 ks it has blown a hole in the piston so replacement engine needed. Bugger, won't be chipping again.

id be carfull some of the stuff is not made to tune. unlike my vw diesel unit injector who was R&D to have massive hp for racing by vw

when it comes to chip tuning, the best gains. where its really making a large difference is when its turbo charged. They up the boost and then re map all the other associated perimeters. On chiptuning website they have a chart that shows the gains in HP and torque for many many models of cars/utes etc.

Keep an eye on the aussie after market places - oil gear pumps with increased flow for 2011 to 2015 ranger, coated pistons etc.

what was the rest of the pistons like?
if ok its probably an injector failure which is not a chipping issue.
if all pistons where cracked then its a chipping issue.

To be legal, you need a LVV cert to chip a turbo car.

See page 10 here:

https://www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/resources/before-you-modify-your-vehicle/docs/certification-and-threshold-schedule.pdf

"Note that LVV certification is always required for . the rechipping of electronic engine control units on turbo cars"

Also bear in mind that the OEM engine manufacturer has access to far more information & resources for their engine control design. Aftermarket chip maunfacturers generally re-tune the engine for more performance at the expense of engine longevity, and emissions.

Yes true, possibly injectors but still a risk I won't be taking again. It wasn't pulled apart to check, but surely the pistons are not all going to go at once regardless of the cause? As soon as one goes it is buggered is it not? i'm no mechanic.

one piston may have a hole but you will typically find cracks in the other pistons or head. ie all the others are very close to going as well.
one piston will run slightly hotter than the others so that one tends to fail first.

Ranger Raptor to have 2 litre 4 cylinder twin turbo diesel.
What are the options for Toyota to hot up the Hilux? 2UR V8 5 litre petrol?
Borrow a six cylinder 3 litre triple turbo diesel off BMW?
Compound supercharging and turbo on the 2.8 diesel.
Hybrid energy recovery (like Le Mans car)?

Still only toys.
And with a 2.0 liter twin turbo diesel with a 10 speed slush box, Really?

+ 1. I drove my good friends 1997 d21 navara at the weekend, what a beast. I am yet to drive a new ute that is as grunty, it is 2wd with a vg30dett/five speed manual/ 4.85 diff. Only the big intercooler gives it away. It is a big step up from the original vg30. The engine is set up well and is highly tuned. I will tell you all how well tuned when it goes on the dyno but it walks over the newest ranger and uses 2 x the fuel.

Know a guy who had his Luxi rechipped. He carries a sizable fuel tank on the back at all times and said there is a hill where he used to have to change down a cog, but it now rips over the top in top gear.
He didn't give a toss about figures etc. He just knew how much better it went.

Recall it was something like 12 hundred bucks worth.

2011 mondeo td bought new. been using tuning box since 2012 and has been faultless. drives so much better than without it and can be installed/removed in 5--10 min so easy to take out for warranty servicing. www.racechip.com
i did tow a kart trailer all over nz and anyone who drove it commented on how well it went. at 130,000 km now with no problems

What have you noticed with the re-chipping?
Which firm did you use?

serf407, Aug 25, 5:45am
Look for the options offered.tune/ chip, turbo, exhaust system, intercooler etc

Do you feel its underpowered?

bunny2121, Aug 25, 10:43am
Had mine done last year by http://chiptuning.co.nz/
I did notice more torque in the mid range when driving. Especially as had 33 tires. But if you looking for 0-100 performance its not worth it.
Don't have ute now, but had no issues with it after tune. Don't think id do it again for what you gain. Unless you tow lots of the time.
