Thanks to everyone who chipped and gave me their two cents on what vehicle could suit me, especially to Jazzpianoma who spent a lot of time explaining 21st century cars. I started looking for an SUV, drove a few, and strongly considered and nearly bought a Suzuki Grand Vitara/Escudo. The 2012-13 VW Tiguan was really good but it pushed the budget way too far, and a Skoda Yeti or Octavia Scout was the same.
Then I tried an Outback 3.6l and loved it. This week I found the car that worked for budget, features (or lack of them), and colour inside and out. Seven years old, mechanically v good, with a few minor paint scrapes to deal with (none of which bother me) and at the lower end of my expected spend of 15-20k.
