Yes, I agree. That is what I run in my petrol ute with 750 000km on the motor. I also use it on most 4cyl jap cars from the 80's and 90's.

The net tells me that motor use 5w30

I really don't think it matters too much.

OK when they are new.

I used Duckhams 20/50 for many years. A can of STP added now and again and always happy, That was in Minis and included some trackwork.

The engine in a hard used 998cc Cooper was stripped down at 100,000 miles (160,000kms) and apart from one crank journal being 1 thou under, no other measurable wear.

Not sure of my sons rav4 engine number but does your drink a bit of oil? His has done 2110000km 1998, he tops is up weekly -just a splash he said.

Anyway any ideas of how to remedy this, it does puff a wee bit of smoke when changing down gears to pass.
Sorry to jump on your post!

I worked for Mobil Oil for over 25 yrs and attended many intensive oil courses
over that period. Would agree with previous who suggested 15w40 and ok you could possibly use 20w50 if living in winterless north but 20w50 is just taking that bit longer on a cold morning to circulate on start up. Stay away from anything lighter than 15w40 on a 20+ yr old car with high kms. Cheers

older 1990s you can add almost a lot of different oils as they dont specific need a special oil to meet emissions and not damage emession after treatment systems if different wrong oils are used. However you would not want some absolut cheapest garbage oil SN or SM is the spec a oil must meet for a 1990s rest is up to you . best not to mix synthetic and mineral oils once you desided stick to the oil specs . basically the cheapest oil who meets that for a 1990s. Importsnt is to change it on time 7500km or once a year with filter toyota or wix are the best choice.

It is my understanding the correct grade of oil 5-30- 10-30 is needed for the vvt to work correctly.
