The battery in our Leaf doesn't contain any cobalt and besides battery technology is rapidly advancing beyond current elemental requirements.

mcfc11, Nov 20, 2:58pm
And what is the range of said leaf?

mcfc11, Nov 20, 3:00pm
So in a race from Cape Rianga to Wellington. Which would win?

budgel, Nov 20, 3:04pm
The conventional car would win on the basis of how long it takes to refuel.

elect70, Nov 20, 3:21pm
Just have it play V8 noise on the stereo & pretend its a V8

elect70, Nov 20, 3:27pm
While refineries are still going to make other products from crude they will be producing fuels & the more people that buy EVs the longer it will last & price will be competitive with electricty win win .

mcfc11, Nov 20, 3:39pm
That's my point.

harm_less, Nov 20, 4:59pm
Range was a bit more than 120km when new but at 7 years old with 55,000km on it range is about 80km now. Time for a new battery in a year or two.

Petrol price will never be competitive with electricity. ICEs waste 75% of the energy in their fuel on heat and noise so very much on the back foot in terms of economy and that's before the lack of mechanical maintenance costs on an EV is considered.

What absolute twaddle. 75% indeed.

mcfc11, Nov 20, 6:00pm
So you can't go to Hawera and back. My god why bother owning it.

mcfc11, Nov 20, 6:01pm
Fastest quarter mile of an EV?

harm_less, Nov 20, 6:39pm
Why? What's in Hawera that's so important?

Does the daily commute with ease and very cheaply so perfect for our purposes in that regard.

No road trips for you then!

harm_less, Nov 20, 9:04pm
Got a geriatric old Holden for longer trips, cargo duty or trailer towing. It's got FA resale value so just taking up shed space until a suitable EV SUV becomes a reality.

cassina1, Nov 20, 10:43pm
I heard at a EV car demonstration lecture a new battery for a Hyundai Kona was just over $30,000. The cost of a new battery will likely offset the fuel savings 100% and if you sell the EV before the battery dies the vehicle will have a big depreciation due to the next owner factoring in the cost of a new battery during their period of ownership.

mimik3, Nov 21, 2:45am
New battery's for the Leaf were $30,000 and now they are $8,000.

harm_less, Nov 21, 12:12pm

nice_lady, Nov 21, 2:46pm
That might work for you but for many others such minimal range is going to be a deal breaker.

ronaldo8, Nov 21, 2:58pm
Not twaddle at all, your comment is twaddle.

Gasoline ice engines are only 20~35% efficient. The other 65~80% is wasted as heat, noise and unuseful mechanical work, I.E. vibration.
And that's when they are running in their sweet spot and at perfect tune.
Stuck in traffic and not recently serviced they are a lot worse.

They are heat engines don't forget, and that is as good a thermal constraint and efficiency as we can achieve with even the most modern material science.

harm_less, Nov 21, 4:02pm
Most people have a second vehicle for various reasons. If not, for the infrequent times that an out of province trip is needed the economics of hiring a car are better than owning an ICE just for the odd long trip, OR swap the EV with your neighbour for the duration. You get your long trip done and your neighbour gets to test drive that EV they've been curious about next door, so win-win!

480 km in the mustang on a charge. After driving that far it is just a matter of having lunch at a fast charge point then carrying on.
the leaf is a different thing as it is simply a commuter car nothing else.
