"US student Jordan Dinsmore, 20, of Columbia, South Carolina, had her car’s manual transmission to thank for her escape from male carjackers. The three approached as she was getting into her car late at night. At gunpoint they took her phone and purse and pushed her into the back seat, all the while threatening kidnap and rape. But their bravado vanished when they realised none of them knew how to drive a manual car. One panicked and ran away. The other two forced Dinsmore to drive to an ATM to withdraw cash. As she drove, Dinsmore quietly unbuckled her seatbelt, put the car in neutral and jumped out, yelling “Call 911! Call 911!” to passing motorists. Police arrested two teenagers, aged 15 and 17."
