Mazda - the choice of Taranaki car thieves

gwimweeper, May 12, 7:03pm
Police urge Mazda owners to be vigilant.

" Since the start of the year, a total of 200 vehicles have been taken in the province - 108 of them Mazdas, many of the type usually referred to as "nana cars".

The most commonly stolen Mazdas are the Demio, Familia and Atenza models."

DY Demio is most stolen car. Fit an alarm and it is not an issue

These cars are clearly easy to steal, but why otherwise steal them? You can understand why thieves would steal the Bounty and Courier utes because the gearbox and diff internals are made of a weird metallic carrot like material of which it was common knowledge 15 years ago that they were weak and low IQ boyracers have an even more weird attraction to these vehicles these days and misguidedly think that they will handle their weekend abuse and repeatedly convert themselves into monday morning pedestrians in the process => flog someone elses one for parts. But why TF would anyone steal an old Demio other than for possible conversion into a kennel is anyones guess.

Not as likely to draw suspicion when you are casing out a potential burglary perhaps. Less conspicuous as a getaway vehicle?

No doubt someone will have the answer. I remember years ago those Isuzu Bighorn Lotus things getting ripped off and burnt out left right and centre all because they had Recaro seats in them FFS.

An easy deterrent is to simply put the child locks on. Thieves nearly always break the small rear door window, reach in and then unlock the door to obtain access. OK, you will still get a busted window, but finding they can't get in that way may be just enough for them to do a runner.

A second class ride is better than a first class walk

It would seem that most are stolen for the fun of stealing them. Gangs of young bleeps going around stealing cars for fun. That and for any cash or valuables in the car. What they like is that they are in and gone in a matter of seconds.

HU ? sorry mon but kiddy locks stop the inside handle from working. Outside handle works fine.

gazzat22, May 13, 10:03am
Kaz not wishing to be a smart ass but havent they got central locking.Would have to have a long arm.Alarms on this site are real cheap.

kazbanz, May 13, 12:22pm
UMMM ;-) -- yes they have central locking. When you lock the car all the doors lock. But they don't auto relock or hold being locked.

gazzat22, May 14, 10:45am
As i understand its only the DY model that is popular and cheap car alarms are cheap. !
