Utterly bizarre electrical issue.

Late model Mitzi Canter. Ignition turned off Indicators all work perfectly via hazard and individual use. with the ignition turned on but vehicle not started as well as vehicle running right front indicator stops working.
This is all the time not intermittent.
I've gone through the obvious stuff. Bulb changed left to right then replaced with a new bulb . Bulb holder checked. Bulb holder unplugged from loom and trouble light same amps plugged in. --All giving the exact same result. Everything else works perfectly. so no warning tones anywhere. Scratching my head with this one

has any aftermarket accessories been added to it, like reversing cameras etc? just wondering if someone has connected something where it should not be, as some lighting is live to bulb, and the switch earths the other side, causing weird issues if that live feed is tapped into.
Possibly unlikely, but have you checked all fuses, just in case. Unlike our old bombs, weird interactions can happen when one is blown, and circuit back feed from something else with all this modern crap fitted.

intrade, Nov 16, 3:44pm
ok i think you have a ground problem.
Better explaind in this example.
complaint car cuts out at red lights with brake applied.
Fuelpump stops working when the lightbulb turns on and uses the ground the pump used Thru the light bulb. and now the light uses the ground the poor ground the pump has is shutting it down as it can no longer use the ground it borrowed.

I would like to know whats on the same ground and where the indicators ground is and its condition.
as i think your indicator borrows its ground from something else .

Clearly something within the ign powered system
Questions.

All the same original bulb holders
Only factory lights fitted including park/head/ high/low beam (width lights?)
Replacement high level brake light
Original indicator control can
Original indicator stalk

No odd bits of melted/ distorted cable wrapping

kazbanz, Nov 16, 3:46pm
My bad-I tried to put all detail in.
This is a totally stock truck so no accessories at all. Its even only got the traffic radio. Yes I've gone through and checked all the fuses although Ive never seen individual indicator light fuses before. (as in individual corners not sides)

bigfatmat1, Nov 16, 3:58pm
indicator switch fault. Or hazard light switch fault. Possibly even a flasher unit fault.

kazbanz, Nov 16, 3:59pm
hazards work normally with ignition off. only right front 'fails" with ignition on/hazards on.

bigfatmat1, Nov 16, 4:01pm
sorry didn't see only right front. Connection issue. Does vehicle have turning lamps?

mrfxit, Nov 16, 4:10pm
Arrh yes good thought
The tell tale might be one not working/ shorted?

sw20, Nov 16, 4:18pm
My old Blade Master the previous owner had fitted a second set of "tail lights" in the place of the lower reflector lenses. They had just wired them into the 12v of the original tail light wiring. Eventually one of the tail lights would turn off when you started the car. Removed the wiring for the extra tail lights but it didn't fix it. Had to replace the tail light as they were a sealed unit.

kazbanz, Nov 16, 5:27pm
No other lamps-ie no auxillary lamps of any sort. so four indicator bulbs in total. -I THOUGHT I'd eliminated switch /solenoid fault because indicators / hazards work normally with ignition off just not with ignition on. -ohh and this is not an inherited from Japan issue but one that has appeared after about 100km in nz

bwg11, Nov 16, 5:28pm
Is it late enough model to a can-bus system? I know the late Outlanders and Lancers are "can-bus" and really need specialist diagnosis and are a whole new ballgame for us old buggers.

bigfatmat1, Nov 16, 7:27pm
Providing it has no factory corner lamps fitted then the front and rear indicator will be of a common wire. So you need to work backwards with a test light from the lamp that isn't going when the fault is occurring.

My car, and probably most modern vehicles, now control all accessories via a computer. Elsewhere there are dozens of relays, and the computer controls all the relays. If the computer earth is bad, as more accessories are turned on, the computer may lose power and reboot several times a second.
Turn on the headlights and indicators and wriggle the wiring around the computer. If everything goes haywire, solder up the earth properly or add a decent wire. First, find the body computer!

Ignition turned off Indicators all work perfectly

AYE?

Just how many vehicles do the indicators work WITHOUT the ignition turned on?

mmm
K.I.S.S.

kazbanz, Nov 17, 11:26am
Looks like YOU learned something today. Canter trucks the indicators work with the power off.

gazzat22, Nov 17, 2:40pm
So do most cars including a DE demio.I had a car some time ago with 2 flasher units one for indicators and one for Hazards.

strobo, Nov 17, 3:35pm
also check type of bulb they use some indicator bulbs have dual filaments and one live pole, been caught out on that a few times.both single and dual filaments use same offset pins ,easy to confuse. Its the way mitsi wire stuff.

strobo, Nov 17, 3:55pm
Other than that the indicator electronic control unit MK387291 for mitsubishi canter fuso 3C13 SWB 2005-2011 Indicator relay ,check with model etc.Ive replaced a few before on canters with so called bizzare problems and with success.probably this one >M896426-0665003391-25.6v 85c/m .Turn signal>2.5w x3 +5w=1.8w Hazard signal >25w max 6 bulbs!

shakespeare6, Nov 17, 4:16pm
Last Mitsi canter I played with which was 2012 was canbus with a SAM for lighting . Was no flasher units etc all that was done in the SAM.
You would need to confirm that first if it is a late model as you say- might point to a issue.

strobo, Nov 17, 4:21pm
the type of module im talking about is a stand alone unit directly specific to the hazard/flasher system.> Not the BCM.

#21 agree depends on the year.

kazbanz, Nov 17, 10:33pm
It’s 2014 so suggesting it can us ?

strobo, Nov 18, 8:52am
From the owners manual a fuso 2015 with SAM system so you will need to establish if there is a warning on the dash for SAM with key on position for check lights ! 6-273.If the amber SAM warning light shows! Turn the starter switch back to “ON”. If the indi-cation goes out, there are no problems. If the warning remains displayed, contact your near-est authorized dealer immediately.•Amber warningThe amber SAM warning is displayed when a failure(of a type that requires inspection of exterior lamps)occurs in the electric control system of the SAM.If this warning appears while driving, stop the vehicle in a safe place and do the following:1. Firmly apply the parking brake and move thegearshift lever to “P”.2. Turn the starter switch to “LOCK”.3. Check the exterior lamps for abnormalities.Replace a blown lamp if any. P. 13-184. Turn the starter switch back to “ON”.5. Switch on the replaced lamp. If the warning goes out, there is no remaining problem with theSAM.6. If the warning remains displayed, contact anauthorized dealer as soon as possible.
(If 2014 model has not SAM ,back to individual units and basics earths, etc).
2.6SAM warningNOTE:SAM, which stands for Signal Detection and Actua-tion Module, is a module that integrates the controland power distribution functions for the electric equipment of the cab and truck body
Red warning The red SAM warning is displayed when a failure occurs in the electric control system of the SAM.If this warning appears while driving, stop the vehi-cle in a safe place.
if it's CANBUS system there will be an indicator light on dash panel for this ,in check light position with key on

kazbanz, Nov 18, 9:23am
Strobo--holey cow dude. When the vehicle first arrived a couple of months back the SAM was displaying. I changed a dual filament taillight bulb and it went out. You think this could be related?

redhead18, Nov 18, 11:10am
Always happy to be learning Kaz.
The **moot point** was this ain't no mk3 cortina where you could leave either side side lights on via the indicator switch. with key out.
And a new flasher unit would be my first call-as when the ignition is on it appears to be the bug bear head scratcher
