But I saw a piece of old school car footage the other day with a car driving on two wheels ( ie on it's side, not wheel standing ) and I wondered, how does it keep driving! Won't the driving power go to the wheels in the air! Or did they have to make a point of using cars with LSD's or similar.

Correct. They used to weld the Diffs.
I remember seeing the Datsun Daredevils at Ashburton show grounds when I was a young tacker. Apparently they were the stunt men for the Dukes of Hazard.
