The last couple of days, when heading uphill, it seems to not be changing down, accelerating results in it revving high but still loosing power.Seems otherwise okay when on the flat, downhill etc. Have had fluid checked and appears okay. Any ideas on the possible cause and likely cost of repair!

Sounds like the clutches are burnt out.
If you smell the fluid it may smell like it's been burnt sort of. if you compare the smell to some new fluid you will see the difference. It may be slightly brown and dull or cloudy looking too.
Best thing would be to pull into an auto specialist and ak them what they think. they shouldn't charge for an opinion.
